As a seasoned travel and lifestyle photographer, I’ve had the privilege of documenting breathtaking landscapes and incredible stories around Australia and overseas. But one project that truly stands out is the remarkable transformation of Mount Ophir Estate in northeastern Victoria, Australia. This historic estate, which has witnessed 127 years of history, has undergone a remarkable journey, and I’m excited to share it with you.
Mount Ophir Estate, established in 1891 by Eiseman and Gleeson, was a vision brought to life by two ambitious business partners in the Chiltern district. Over the years, it changed hands and eventually found itself under the stewardship of the Burgoyne family, London-based wine merchants, who aspired to make it the wine center of Australia. At its peak, it was the largest, state-of-the-art wine producing complex in the southern hemisphere.
The estate once boasted 740 acres of vines, a thriving community with twenty houses, and even its own football and cricket teams. Its wines bore the royal seal of England and were shipped to satisfy the palates of British aristocracy. However, the winery closed its doors in 1955, marking the end of an era.
Today, Mount Ophir Estate is owned by the Brown family and with a lot of blood, sweat and tears has been reborn. While the estate has been reduced to 140 acres, it has found a new lease on life as a working event space and short stay accommodation. The breathtaking 360-degree views, including the Murray River Basin and the Snowy Mountains to the east, make it a unique and exclusive destination for travellers seeking a taste of history and luxury.
I had the privilege of capturing just some of this incredible transformation through my lens, and the result is a series of photographs that tell the story of Mount Ophir Estate’s resurgence. The juxtaposition of its rich history and its vibrant present is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
To experience the magic of Mount Ophir Estate for yourself, plan your visit today. Explore the history, savor the wines, and soak in the picturesque surroundings.
